Bowen stood just inside the Wallers’ front door. “Are you going to be all right?” he asked Elsie.

“Yes,” she replied numbly. “I still don’t understand how …”

The door to the bedroom at the top of the stairs opened. The giant Andel descended, Doc Waller right behind him. “Elsie, fetch Mr. Berg some coffee, will you?”

She nodded and quickly went down the hall to the kitchen. Bowen watched her go, then turned his attention to the huge man now standing in front of him. He was a good head taller than Bowen, who wasn’t by any measure short, and much broader too. “Good evening.”

Andel looked past him to the window by the door. It was growing dark outside. “That it is. You must be the man Elsie Waller saved.”

That again? Was there anyone in this town who didn’t think of it that way? Well, it could be worse – at least they weren’t talking about what had happened with Grandma. Yet. “Yes, she saved me.”

The huge man extended a hand. “I’m Andel Berg. August tells me you are keeping an eye on Doc and Grandma’s little Elsie. I’m glad to hear it.”

Bowen took the man’s hand to shake it, and almost got his own lost in it. “Er, yes. It seems a wise precaution to take, with women being so scarce here.”

Bowen felt a sudden pang of jealousy, but dismissed it when Elsie came down the hall carrying two cups of coffee. She handed one to Mr. Berg, and one to him. He took it gratefully. Having left his coat at the church, the short walk to the Wallers’ home was all it took to chill him to the bone.

“Do you want some coffee, too, Grandpa?” Elsie asked him.

“I’ll get some in a minute, honey. Have I introduced you to Mr. Berg?”

Elsie stared up at the giant, who was taking a sip of the hot brew she’d given him. “No. I’m sure I would remember if you had.”

Doc let out a small chuckle. “That’s what most folks say about Mr. Berg. Andel, this is my … well, actually she’s my third cousin, but she calls me Grandpa.”

Mr. Berg smiled. “I hope you like it here in Clear Creek.”

“Yes, I … I do like it here.”

Bowen took a step forward. It was all he could do to keep from taking her in his arms. She was frightened, he could tell, frightened and overwhelmed. He knew the feeling well.

“Why don’t you and Mr. Drake go sit a spell in the parlor, honey?” Doc told her. “I’m gonna speak with Mr. Berg here a moment.”

“Yes, Grandpa.” Elsie took Bowen by the hand and unceremoniously pulled him into the parlor with her. He glanced over his shoulder at the other two men, but Doc Waller and Mr. Berg were already heading back up the stairs. What
